About India

India occupies the greater part of South Asia, and it represents a highly diverse population consisting of thousands of ethnic groups and likely hundreds of languages. India contains around one-sixth of the world’s population. The Himalayas (from the Sanskrit words hima, “snow,” and alaya, “abode”), form the northern limit of India and border Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan, India, and China.

There are so many different castes, tribes, and language families represented in India that the total number is virtually unknowable. An incredibly diverse country, India has a multitude of religious minorities making up those that don’t claim Hinduism as their religion including Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Jains.

With so much poverty in India, outreaches in India are often combined with practical help such as teaching children or basic medical care. Indians are very open to hear about Jesus and receive prayer. However, it takes much discipleship and teaching for them to understand how Jesus is the only Savior.
