About Nicaragua

The largest country in Central America, Nicaragua is home to over six million people with a multitude of ethnic populations. Bordered by Honduras, the Caribbean, Costa Rica, and the Pacific Ocean, Nicaragua is also home to the largest lake in Central America, Lake Nicaragua. The largest city in Nicaragua is the capital, Managua. A fun fact about Nicaragua is that the only freshwater shark in the world lives in Lake Nicaragua. The Ruins of Leon Viejo, the oldest city in all of Central America, is also found in this country. Home to 70 areas of protected regions of water and land, Nicaragua works to actively protect endangered species including various monkeys, sloths, and sea turtles.

In Nicaragua, Christianity is a normal part of the culture. Most people would say they believe in God and that Jesus died on the cross. The Roman Catholic church has a large influence and is still the predominant affiliation. The evangelical church is continually growing. Most people are very open to talking about God, and cultural phrases incorporate "God language" into everyday life. People frequently say, "God bless you" as part of their goodbye, or "If God wills it" when talking about the future. Our partners in Nicaragua describe most people's faith as very shallow and not something they think about deeply. However, they do pray often for the things they need, and recognize God's provision when they are cared for.
