Live in the Light
It’s no stretch to say that John, Jesus’ disciple, had a front row seat to Jesus’ life. John saw the big moments. He saw Jesus teach, perform miracles, get scrutinized by the religious leaders, and tell parables. John also witnessed Jesus before the cross at the last supper, on the cross in suffering and after the cross in a resurrected body. If there was a highlight reel of Jesus, John saw it first-hand. But … John also saw the moments that don’t make Sportscenter or the evening news. John was with Jesus in everyday moments at meals, when the crowd was gone, on the side of a mountain, or in a boat with just a small group.
John heard all that Jesus taught. He also saw how Jesus lived. Perhaps that is why he wrote so much about the importance of both doctrine, or what we know, and praxis, how we live. The book of 1 John is a prime example of this writing where John calls followers of Jesus to marry our learning with our living.
